AKTU SGPA and CGPA — What's the Difference?

SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) measures your academic performance in a single semester. It is calculated by multiplying the grade points of each subject with its credit hours, summing all those values, and dividing by the total credits for that semester. CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) represents your overall performance across all completed semesters. It is a credit-weighted average of all your semester SGPAs.

AKTU also uses YGPA (Yearly Grade Point Average), which combines the odd and even semester of the same academic year using a credit-weighted formula. Your degree certificate from AKTU shows your final CGPA calculated across all 8 semesters of your B.Tech program.

Official AKTU Grading Scale 2026

AKTU follows a 10-point absolute grading system for all B.Tech, M.Tech, MBA, MCA and B.Pharm programs. The grade points are: O (Outstanding) = 10 points for 90–100 marks, A+ (Excellent) = 9 points for 80–89 marks, A (Very Good) = 8 points for 70–79 marks, B+ (Good) = 7 points for 60–69 marks, B (Above Average) = 6 points for 55–59 marks, C (Average) = 5 points for 50–54 marks, P (Pass) = 4 points for 45–49 marks, and F (Fail) = 0 points for below 45 marks. A minimum SGPA of 5.0 is required to pass a semester. A minimum CGPA of 5.0 is required to be awarded the degree.

How to Convert AKTU CGPA to Percentage

AKTU has two percentage conversion formulas used in different contexts. The simple formula widely used for placement forms and job applications is: Percentage = CGPA × 10. So a CGPA of 8.5 equals 85%. The more precise formula from the official ordinance is: Percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. This gives a slightly lower but technically more accurate percentage. For example, a CGPA of 8.5 gives 77.5% using this formula. Our calculator shows both so you can use whichever is accepted by the employer or institution you are applying to.

AKTU Division Classification

AKTU classifies degrees as follows based on final CGPA: CGPA 7.5 and above with no backlogs = First Division with Honours. CGPA between 6.5 and 7.5 = First Division. CGPA between 5.0 and 6.5 = Pass. CGPA below 5.0 = the degree is not awarded. Most reputed companies conducting campus placements require a minimum CGPA of 6.5 to 7.0. Government job applications and GATE registration generally require at least 5.0 CGPA or 50% marks equivalent.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the passing SGPA in AKTU 2026?
The minimum SGPA required to pass a semester in AKTU is 5.0. If your SGPA is below 5.0 in any semester, you will be considered to have failed that semester and will need to appear for improvement exams. For the degree to be awarded, your overall CGPA must be at least 5.0 at the end of all 8 semesters.
How many credits are in each AKTU B.Tech semester?
A typical AKTU B.Tech semester has 20 to 25 credits, varying slightly by branch and semester. The total credit load for the full 4-year B.Tech program is approximately 160 to 180 credits across 8 semesters. Each subject carries 3 to 5 credits based on its contact hours per week, and lab and practical subjects typically carry 1 to 2 credits each.
Does getting a backlog affect my CGPA permanently?
When you fail a subject (F grade), you receive 0 grade points for that course, which severely lowers your SGPA and CGPA. However, when you clear the backlog in a subsequent attempt, the new grade replaces the F grade in the CGPA calculation. So clearing backlogs does help improve your CGPA. The F grade is not permanently stuck — it gets replaced once you pass the subject.
What CGPA is needed for TCS, Infosys and Wipro campus placements from AKTU colleges?
For TCS, Wipro, Capgemini, Accenture and HCL, the minimum CGPA cutoff is typically 6.0 (equivalent to 60% marks). For Infosys and Cognizant, it is usually 6.5. Core engineering companies and PSUs typically require higher CGPAs of 7.0 to 7.5. These cutoffs change slightly each year and vary by college, so always check the specific company's eligibility criteria during campus recruitment.
Can I apply for GATE with a low CGPA from AKTU?
Yes, there is no CGPA cutoff for appearing in GATE. Any student in the final year or graduate of an engineering program can appear for GATE regardless of CGPA. However, many PSUs that recruit through GATE have their own CGPA cutoffs (usually 60% or 6.0 CGPA) for interview shortlisting. IIT M.Tech admissions also consider CGPA as part of their selection process for GATE-qualified candidates.
How is YGPA different from CGPA in AKTU?
YGPA (Yearly Grade Point Average) is the combined GPA for one academic year — it merges the odd semester (e.g. Sem 1) and even semester (e.g. Sem 2) using a credit-weighted formula: YGPA = (SGPA_odd × Credits_odd + SGPA_even × Credits_even) / (Credits_odd + Credits_even). CGPA covers all 8 semesters of your entire degree. YGPA is an intermediate metric shown on your annual marksheet, while CGPA is the final overall metric on your degree certificate.
