JEE Main 2026 Marks vs Percentile vs Rank — Complete Guide
Understanding the relationship between marks, percentile and rank is essential for JEE Main 2026 students. NTA does not release results as raw marks — the official result shows only your percentile (NTA score). Your All India Rank is then derived from the percentile across all sessions combined.
The percentile shows what percentage of students scored equal to or below you. A percentile of 95 means you scored better than 95% of all students who appeared in your session.
| Marks (out of 300) | Expected Percentile | Expected AIR (General) | What it means |
| 280–300 | 99.99+ | Top 100 | Perfect / near-perfect score |
| 250–279 | 99.5–99.9 | 500–5,000 | Top IITs via JEE Advanced |
| 200–249 | 99–99.5 | 5,000–15,000 | Top NITs CSE / JEE Advanced eligible |
| 160–199 | 97.5–99 | 15,000–30,000 | Good NITs, top IIITs |
| 130–159 | 95–97.5 | 30,000–65,000 | Mid-tier NITs, IIITs |
| 100–129 | 92–95 | 65,000–1,30,000 | Newer NITs, GFTIs |
| 70–99 | 85–92 | 1,30,000–3,00,000 | GFTIs, state colleges |
| Below 70 | Below 85 | 3,00,000+ | State / private colleges |
JEE Main 2026 Qualifying Cutoff — Category Wise
The qualifying cutoff decides who is eligible for JEE Advanced 2026. Only the top 2.5 lakh candidates across all categories qualify. Based on JEE Main 2025 cutoffs and 2026 exam difficulty, the expected qualifying cutoffs are: General category 93–95 percentile, OBC-NCL 80–82 percentile, EWS 80–82 percentile, SC 62–63 percentile, ST 49–50 percentile, PwD 0.11 percentile. These are qualifying cutoffs only — they do not guarantee admission to any college. College admission depends on your rank and JoSAA counselling.
NIT Admission Through JEE Main 2026 — Expected Cutoff Ranks
NIT admissions happen through JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) counselling. There are 31 NITs across India with over 24,000 B.Tech seats. Cutoffs vary by institute tier, branch, category, and home state/other state quota. Tier 1 NITs like NIT Trichy, NIT Warangal and NIT Surathkal require a rank below 2,000 for CSE General category. Tier 2 NITs like NIT Calicut, NIT Rourkela and MNIT Jaipur close at rank 2,000–8,600 for CSE. Mid-tier NITs close at rank 8,000–30,000 and newer NITs may have seats available up to rank 1 lakh and beyond for less popular branches.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between JEE Main marks and percentile?
JEE Main marks are your raw score out of 300 — calculated as (correct answers × 4) minus (wrong answers × 1). Percentile is a normalised score showing how you performed relative to all candidates in your session. NTA releases results as percentile, not marks, because JEE Main is conducted across multiple shifts with varying difficulty levels. A normalised percentile ensures fairness across all shifts.
How many marks do I need for 99 percentile in JEE Main 2026?
Based on JEE Main 2026 Session 1 analysis and expert predictions, approximately 180–200 marks out of 300 corresponds to a 99 percentile in a moderate difficulty paper. For an easy shift this could require 190–210 marks. For a hard shift it could be around 165–185 marks. The exact figure changes with shift difficulty and the normalisation process applied by NTA.
Can I get into NIT with 95 percentile in JEE Main 2026?
Yes, a 95 percentile corresponds to approximately rank 65,000–70,000 for General category. At this rank you can get admission to mid-tier NITs in less popular branches like Civil, Metallurgy or Production Engineering. For CSE at top NITs, you would need 98–99+ percentile. For top branches at mid-tier NITs, 96–97 percentile is generally needed. Using the JoSAA counselling process, filling multiple choice options is key to maximising your chances.
If I appear in both JEE Main sessions, which score counts?
NTA considers the best percentile score from Session 1 or Session 2 for calculating your final All India Rank. If you appear in both sessions, the higher of your two percentile scores is used. This means appearing in Session 2 can only improve your rank, never reduce it. JoSAA counselling for both IITs and NITs uses the final AIR calculated from the best session.
What is JoSAA counselling and how does it work?
JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) is the centralised counselling process for admission to IITs, NITs, IIITs and GFTIs through JEE Main and JEE Advanced ranks. It runs approximately 5–6 rounds after JEE Advanced results. Candidates fill college and branch preferences in order. Seats are allotted based on rank, category and availability. Unfilled seats from each round move to the next round. You must accept the allotted seat and pay the fee within the round deadline to stay in the process.
How accurate is this JEE Main rank predictor?
This tool uses AI trained on historical JEE Main marks vs percentile vs rank data from 2023 to 2025, combined with 2026 session 1 trends. Estimates are indicative — actual rank depends on NTA's normalisation process applied after all sessions are complete. Shift difficulty plays a major role: the same marks can give different percentiles in different shifts. Always verify with the official NTA result at jeemain.nta.nic.in and use official JoSAA cutoffs for final decisions.
