You have applied for BHU SET 2026, or you are about to. Now comes the part that actually matters: preparation. And the right way to start preparation is not to pick up the thickest book on the shelf. It is to first understand exactly what the exam covers, what kind of questions come, and how much time you have to attempt them.
This article gives you the complete BHU SET 2026 syllabus for all classes and streams, the exam pattern, and a realistic preparation plan for the time left before the exams begin on 22 April 2026.
Quick Note:– Last date to apply is 20 March 2026. Exams start from 22 April 2026. That gives you roughly 4 to 5 weeks for focused preparation. Enough, if you stay consistent.
Before going subject by subject, here is how the exam is structured:

One thing to take seriously: once you darken an oval on the OMR sheet, it cannot be changed. No whitener is allowed. So mark your answers carefully. Also, the Roll Number and Set Number on the OMR sheet must be filled correctly. Getting that wrong means the answer sheet will not be evaluated, which is a completely avoidable mistake.
You are allowed to take the question booklet home after the exam. This is useful to cross-check your answers once the provisional answer key is released on 4 May 2026.

The Class IX paper is set up to Class 8 standard. It covers 5 subjects in 100 MCQs:

The base for preparation here is simple: NCERT textbooks from Class 6 to Class 8. That is all you need. No need to go beyond that for this exam.

After clearing SET and getting admission, you will need to choose a subject combination. This is allotted strictly based on your merit rank, so higher scorers get first choice.
Science (Maths Group): English Core, Physics, Chemistry, Maths along with Computer Science as the fifth subject in one combination, and Hindi Core / Sanskrit / Physical Education / Vocal Music / Psychology as options in other combinations.
Science (Biology Group): English Core, Physics, Chemistry, Biology along with Computer Science or Agriculture in one combination, and Hindi Core / Sanskrit / Maths / Physical Education / Vocal Music / Psychology in others.
Commerce: English Core, Accountancy, Business Studies, Economics and a fifth subject from Maths, Vocal Music, Physical Education, Computer Science, Hindi Core or Sanskrit.
Arts: Hindi or English, History or Psychology, Political Science or Physical Education, Economics or Geography, and from Maths / Computer Science / Sanskrit / Hindi / Music / Physical Education.
Science: English Core, Physics, Chemistry, Maths or Biology, and a fifth subject from Hindi Core / Sanskrit Core / Urdu Core / Computer Science / Music (Vocal, Sitar, Tabla) / Physical Education.
Commerce: English Core, Accountancy, Business Studies, Economics, and a fifth subject from Hindi / Sanskrit / Urdu / Computer Science / Music / Maths / Physical Education.
Arts: Hindi or English Elective, History or Hindi or English Core, Economics or Geography or Home Science, Political Science or Psychology or Painting, and Maths / Computer Science / Sanskrit / Urdu / Music / Physical Education.
One language (English or Hindi) is compulsory. The same language cannot be taken at both core and elective level.
Exams start 22 April. Today is mid-March. You have around 5 weeks. That is not a lot, but it is enough if you are focused and strategic about it. Yahan jo log galti karte hain woh yeh hai that they try to cover everything randomly. Do not do that.
This is genuinely the most useful thing you can do. BHU has made old question papers available for free on their official portal, from SET 2017 up to SET 2024. Start with the most recent ones.
Solve a paper cold, without any preparation, and see where you stand. Note down which subjects and which types of questions you are getting wrong. That becomes your personal list of weak areas to fix.

BHU SET follows NCERT-based curriculum. For Class IX aspirants, go through Class 6 to 8 NCERT textbooks. For Class XI, Class 9 and 10 NCERT books are your foundation.
Do not start with thick reference books or guides right away. NCERT first, then MCQ practice books if you still have time and want extra practice.
This is one of the most neglected sections and also one of the most scoring. All Class XI streams have General Studies in the paper. Make it a habit to read the news headlines daily. Cover major events from the last 3 to 4 months. It does not take much time but can make a real difference in your score.
100 questions in 120 minutes means roughly 1.2 minutes per question. That sounds comfortable, but in practice, if you spend 3 to 4 minutes on a tough question, you will run out of time at the end. Practicing at home with a stopwatch changes this completely.

Yes, it follows NCERT/CBSE curriculum. Class 8 standard for Class IX and Class 10 standard for Class XI.
NCERT textbooks are the most important. After that, you can use Arihant or MTG MCQ practice sets for extra practice. Previous year papers from bhuonline.in are the most valuable resource of all.
Quite important. The Commerce paper includes Mathematics along with Economics and General Studies. Basic Class 10 level Maths covering profit and loss, interest, percentages and ratio should be well covered.
Current affairs from the last 3 to 4 months, India GK, important national events, basic science and environment topics, sports highlights, and India’s polity basics. It is not very difficult but requires regular reading.
Preparation for BHU SET 2026 does not need to be complicated. The syllabus is clear, NCERT is the base, previous year papers are freely available, and you have around 5 weeks before the first exam. That is more than enough for a focused student.
Start today. The students who score well in SET are not necessarily the ones who studied the most. They are the ones who studied smart, practiced MCQs consistently, and stayed calm on exam day.
