Engineering Degree secured through Correspondence Since 2001 is Suspended – Supreme Court

The Supreme Court has suspended the Engineering Degree secured through a Correspondence Course or Distance Learning program Since 2001. This shocking news came on 3rd November that all those Engineering degree will be invalid which is secured via Distance Education Program is invalid. Supreme Court of India announced that all the engineering graduates who have received their engineering degree via distance learning by JRN Rajasthan Vidyapeeth, Rajasthan (JRN), Institute of Advanced Studies in Education, Rajasthan (IASE) and Allahabad Agricultural Institute, Allahabad (AAI) is suspended and completely invalid.

The court said in the judgment that the validity of correspondence courses of four deemed universities that is JRN Rajasthan Vidyapeeth, Institute of Advanced Studies in Education in Rajasthan, Allahabad Agricultural Institute and Vinayaka Mission’s Research Foundation in Tamil Nadu have been providing engineering education through correspondence or distance learning since 2001 despite AICTE disapproval which is invalid.

For those who had enrolled during the academic sessions 2001-2005, the Court noted that since 2004, the UGC Guidelines gave liberty to the concerned Universities to apply for the ex-postfacto approval and observed, “the matter is required to be with some sympathy so that interest of those students who were enrolled during the academic sessions 2001- 2005 is protected”.

This ‘sympathy’ was, however, not shown to those who had enrolled after 2005, observing that the “Policy Statements, as well as warnings issued from time to time, were absolutely clear” with regard to the lack of sanction to such Courses.

Thus, any technical course conducted by the technical institutions including the institution Deemed to be university concerned through distance education mode, except a course in MBA and MCA, is contrary to the policy of the AICTE. Hence, degrees or diplomas in a technical course through distance education mode other than a course in MBA and MCA awarded by the technical institutions including the institution Deemed to be university cannot be treated valid degree or diploma.

Deemed Universities in India are developing like any other paan stalls in the country. Nowadays students are showing no interest in Engineering and colleges have so many empty seats due to which they are going in loss and they come up with courses like distance learning and acquire such students who want to get a degree without disturbing their current work.
