You have applied for BHU SET 2026, or you are about to. Now comes the part that actually matters: preparation. And the right way to start preparation is not to pick up the thickest book on the shelf. It is to first understand exactly what the exam covers, what kind of questions come, and how much time you have to attempt them.
This article gives you the complete BHU SET 2026 syllabus for all classes and streams, the exam pattern, and a realistic preparation plan for the time left before the exams begin on 22 April 2026.
Quick Note:– Last date to apply is 20 March 2026. Exams start from 22 April 2026. That gives you roughly 4 to 5 weeks for focused preparation. Enough, if you stay consistent.
BHU SET 2026 Exam Pattern – Understand This First
Before going subject by subject, here is how the exam is structured:
| Parameter | Detail |
|---|---|
| Exam Mode | Offline (pen and paper) |
| Question Type | MCQ – Multiple Choice Questions (4 options each) |
| Total Questions | 100 |
| Duration | 2 hours (8:00 AM to 10:00 AM) |
| Negative Marking | Not mentioned in official bulletin |
| Answer Medium | Blue or Black ballpoint pen on OMR sheet only |
| Minimum Qualifying Marks | 33% (General/OBC/EWS) | 25% (SC/ST/Divyang) |
One thing to take seriously: once you darken an oval on the OMR sheet, it cannot be changed. No whitener is allowed. So mark your answers carefully. Also, the Roll Number and Set Number on the OMR sheet must be filled correctly. Getting that wrong means the answer sheet will not be evaluated, which is a completely avoidable mistake.
You are allowed to take the question booklet home after the exam. This is useful to cross-check your answers once the provisional answer key is released on 4 May 2026.

Preparation Strategy – How to Make the Most of the Time Left
Exams start 22 April. Today is mid-March. You have around 5 weeks. That is not a lot, but it is enough if you are focused and strategic about it. Yahan jo log galti karte hain woh yeh hai that they try to cover everything randomly. Do not do that.
Step 1 – Start with Previous Year Papers
This is genuinely the most useful thing you can do. BHU has made old question papers available for free on their official portal, from SET 2017 up to SET 2024. Start with the most recent ones.
Solve a paper cold, without any preparation, and see where you stand. Note down which subjects and which types of questions you are getting wrong. That becomes your personal list of weak areas to fix.
Old papers are available here: bhuonline.in
Step 2 – NCERT Is Your Primary Source
BHU SET follows NCERT-based curriculum. For Class IX aspirants, go through Class 6 to 8 NCERT textbooks. For Class XI, Class 9 and 10 NCERT books are your foundation.
Do not start with thick reference books or guides right away. NCERT first, then MCQ practice books if you still have time and want extra practice.
Step 3 – Do Not Ignore General Studies
This is one of the most neglected sections and also one of the most scoring. All Class XI streams have General Studies in the paper. Make it a habit to read the news headlines daily. Cover major events from the last 3 to 4 months. It does not take much time but can make a real difference in your score.
Step 4 – Practice MCQs with a Timer
100 questions in 120 minutes means roughly 1.2 minutes per question. That sounds comfortable, but in practice, if you spend 3 to 4 minutes on a tough question, you will run out of time at the end. Practicing at home with a stopwatch changes this completely.
Suggested 5-Week Plan
| Week | What to Focus On |
|---|---|
| Week 1 | Solve 2 previous year papers to identify weak areas. Start NCERT revision from the most important subjects for your stream. |
| Week 2 | Cover the major science / maths / social science topics thoroughly from NCERT. |
| Week 3 | English, Hindi grammar revision. Start General Studies (current affairs + India GK). |
| Week 4 | Full-length mock tests with timer. Analyse mistakes. Do not leave any topic half-done. |
| Last few days | Only revision. Formulas, important facts, definitions. Get proper sleep. Do not start anything new at this stage. |

Exam Day Tips
- Reach the exam venue at least 1 hour before the start time. This is mandatory as per the official bulletin, not just advice.
- Carry your admit card and a valid photo ID. No entry without these.
- Only blue or black ballpoint pen allowed. No pencil, no marker.
- Check your question booklet in the first 10 minutes for any missing or faulty pages. Report it to the invigilator immediately if there is an issue.
- Fill Roll Number and Set Number on the OMR sheet very carefully. An error here cannot be corrected later.
- Attempt the questions you are confident about first. Do not get stuck on one difficult question for too long.
- You can take the question booklet home. Compare with the answer key released on 4 May 2026.
