Michelin started selling the Primacy 5 in India on 3 August. It is the first passenger car tyre the company has actually manufactured in this country, at its plant near Chennai. Prices start at about Rs 10,000 and sizes run from 16 inch to 22 inch.
The question I keep seeing under the launch coverage is whether an India-made Michelin is the same thing as an imported one. Michelin says the Chennai line runs the same machines, the same processes and the same quality standards as its plants abroad. That is a company statement and you can weigh it as one, though the plant has been building truck and bus tyres for export since 2014, so it is not a new facility learning from scratch.
Anyway, the more useful stuff is in the details nobody printed.
The Primacy 5 is a premium touring tyre meant for sedans and SUVs. It works on petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric cars. You will find it at Michelin Tyres and Service stores and roughly 800 dealers around the country.
Price depends on size, so Rs 10,000 is the floor, not the average. On a 19 inch SUV you will pay quite a bit more than that.
Michelin is going after the replacement market first. Supplying carmakers directly comes later, if volumes justify it.
One small thing that got blurred in the coverage. The first India-made tyre actually rolled off the line in September 2025. It only reached shops in August 2026. Eleven months went into testing and certification before anyone could buy one.
Why Chennai? – Michelin signed with the Tamil Nadu government back in 2009 and set up at the SIPCOT park in Thervoy Kandigai, about 50 km north of Chennai. Truck and bus radials started there in early 2014. Initial spend was over Rs 2,800 crore.
In September 2025 they added Rs 686 crore, roughly 76 million euro, just for a car tyre line. Total at that site is now past Rs 3,400 crore, with combined capacity around 54,000 tonnes.
The official reason is that Michelin likes producing close to its customers. That is true as far as it goes. The other half of it is that India made importing uncomfortable. BIS marking rules, anti-dumping duties and certification costs all push a foreign brand towards either building here or shrinking here. Imports still covered around 30 percent of the Indian tyre market in 2025, mostly premium and specialty sizes that nobody made locally in volume. Michelin has now shifted part of that onshore.
Tamil Nadu also already does about 40 percent of India’s tyre production, so the suppliers and the trained people were sitting there.
More products are coming off that line by end 2027: Pilot Sport 4 SUV, Pilot Sport 5 and LTX Trail ST. Exports to the Middle East and Africa are planned once local demand is covered.
Michelin’s headline claims are 8 metres shorter wet braking when the tyre is new, 9 metres shorter when it is worn, and 4 metres shorter on dry roads. All three are against rival tyres in the same category.
The testing was done by Applus+ IDIADA, an independent Spanish engineering firm, at the NATRAX track in Indore during May and June 2026. The car was a Hyundai Creta on 205/65 R16.
So the surface was Indian, which counts for something. But it was one size on one car. Your 235/55 R19 on a heavier SUV is a different tyre carrying a different load, and the same numbers will not follow it around.
The worn-tyre figure is the one I would look at twice. Almost every tyre brand tests brand new rubber, because that is when any tyre performs best. Wet grip usually falls as tread depth drops and the tyre stops clearing water properly. Publishing a worn number, and one that is bigger than the new number, is a claim about how the tyre behaves halfway through its life. That is where your car spends most of its time.
Michelin also claims 8 percent more mileage and 6.5 percent better energy efficiency than the older Primacy 4ST, plus a 9 percent better comfort score. The first two normally pull against each other. Rubber that grips hard tends to wear faster and drag more. Getting both to improve together is the actual engineering work, and it comes from compound chemistry and tread shape rather than anything dramatic.
Comfort scoring is more subjective, so treat that 9 percent loosely.
Every tyre says EV ready now. In this case the reasoning is straightforward. An electric car carries 200 to 400 kg of extra battery weight and delivers full torque from standstill, so tyres wear faster on it. Rolling resistance directly costs you range. And with no engine noise up front, tyre roar becomes the loudest thing in the cabin at highway speed. A tyre tuned for weight, rolling resistance and noise is genuinely more useful on an EV than on a petrol hatchback.
Since October 2022, tyres sold in India have had to meet requirements on rolling resistance, wet grip and rolling noise under Automotive Industry Standards, carried into the BEE star labelling scheme. Every passenger car tyre sold here, Indian or foreign, falls under it.
Which means your tyre has a star rating from 1 to 5 for fuel efficiency. Going from a 1 star to a 5 star tyre was estimated to save around 750 kg of CO2 over 40,000 km, and the fuel saving is yours.
Ask for the star rating the next time you are standing in a tyre shop. Most dealers will not bring it up on their own. It is the only objective number an ordinary buyer gets, and almost nobody asks for it.
Michelin, for what it is worth, was the first brand to register under the scheme, picking up India’s first 4 star commercial vehicle label in 2022 and the first 5 star passenger car labels soon after.
If your car came on 14 or 15 inch wheels, skip it. The range starts at 16.
Beyond that it comes down to how much you drive. At Rs 10,000 and up per corner, you are paying for longevity and efficiency that only add up over distance. Somebody doing 20,000 km a year on highways will get their money back. Somebody doing 6,000 km of city running probably will not, because those tyres will harden with age before they wear out, and a mid-range tyre replaced on the same schedule serves them just as well.
The efficiency and noise arguments are stronger if you drive an EV.
Two habits worth building regardless of brand. Check the DOT code on the sidewall, the four digits telling you the week and year it was made, because a tyre that sat in a warehouse for eighteen months has already aged. And get your alignment and balancing done at fitting. Good tyres on a badly aligned car is money thrown away.
Bridgestone, Continental, Goodyear, Yokohama and Pirelli all sell in this band, and Apollo, CEAT, MRF and JK Tyre have been pushing into premium radials for a few years now. Compare star ratings and warranty terms before you compare brand names.
What does the Michelin Primacy 5 cost in India? From around Rs 10,000 per tyre, rising with size across the 16 to 22 inch range.
Is it really made in India? Yes, at Michelin’s Chennai plant. It is the first Michelin passenger car tyre built here, though the same plant has made truck and bus tyres since 2014.
Is it good for electric cars? Michelin sells it for petrol, hybrid and electric. The 6.5 percent efficiency gain over the Primacy 4ST helps range, and the noise-focused tread matters more in a quiet EV cabin.
What else will Michelin build in India? Pilot Sport 4 SUV, Pilot Sport 5 and LTX Trail ST, added in phases at Chennai through the end of 2027.
The tyre itself is a fine premium tyre and probably a good one. The more interesting part is that a French company looked at India’s premium replacement market and decided it was worth a dedicated production line, an export plan and a supplier search. Regulation pushed that decision as much as demand did.
For the rest of us, the star rating and the DOT code will save more money over ten years than the badge on the sidewall ever will.
