India’s IT business is changing dramatically in terms of its landscape. With the ongoing growth of the digital economy, IT corporations are expanding their search beyond the conventional centers of Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Pune. The next uncharted territory? Cities in Tiers 2 and tier-3 include Patna, Visakhapatnam, Lucknow, Dehradun, Kochi, Jaipur, Ahmedabad. This change is a calculated strategic decision to save operating costs, foster regional development, and access hitherto undiscovered talent sources.
Hexaware Technologies also recently expanded its office to Dehradun and expanding, Infosys also opening its new centres in tier-2 cities across India. Many startups and small medium companies are already working in these citifies to give services and building product.
According to data from TeamLease, the combined tech talent in cities like Chandigarh, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Indore, Bhubaneswar, Visakhapatnam, Coimbatore, and Kochi is estimated to be approximately 550,000 professionals. This is approximately 10% of India’s entire tech talent pool.
As per the Economic Times, the data center industry is expanding beyond traditional hubs like Mumbai and Chennai and is now targeting emerging hotspots such as Kochi, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Patna, and Visakhapatnam. This shift is driven by the need to serve a growing but geographically dispersed user base across the country, as noted by executives from leading companies.
1. Cost-Effectiveness: The rising cost of real estate and operational expenses in metropolitan cities is a major driver for IT companies to explore tier-2 and tier-3 cities. These cities offer a more affordable alternative, enabling companies to maintain profitability while expanding their operations.
2. Access to Untapped Talent: These smaller cities boast a growing pool of skilled professionals, particularly fresh graduates from local engineering colleges. IT companies are finding that these cities provide access to a workforce that is both talented and eager to work, often at more competitive salary levels than their metro counterparts.
3. Infrastructure Development: The Indian government’s focus on improving infrastructure in smaller cities has made them more attractive to IT companies. Improved connectivity, better living conditions, and the availability of modern amenities are key factors that support this expansion.
4. Government Incentives: Many state governments are offering attractive incentives to IT companies to set up operations in their regions. These include tax benefits, subsidies on land, and relaxed regulatory norms, which make tier-2 and tier-3 cities a lucrative option.
