RMLAU Passing Criteria: What the Numbers Actually Mean
Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Avadh University follows a two-level passing rule that trips up a lot of students every semester. Understanding both conditions is important before you interpret your marksheet.
The first rule is paper-level. You must score at least 33% in every individual paper to pass that paper. This applies to all UG and PG courses across BA, BSc, BCom, MA, MSc, MCom and other programmes. For subjects that have both a theory component and a practical component, you need to clear 33% separately in each. Passing the theory portion but failing the practical does not mean you passed that subject.
The second rule is aggregate-level. Even if you pass every individual paper, your total marks across all subjects must add up to at least 40% to be declared passed overall. In practice most students who clear 33% per paper also cross the 40% aggregate, but narrow passes on multiple papers can push your aggregate below the threshold. The calculator above flags both conditions separately so you know exactly where you stand.
Division Classification at RMLAU
Once you have crossed both passing thresholds, your result gets a division based on your aggregate percentage. Here is the complete classification.
| Aggregate Percentage | Division | What it Means |
|---|---|---|
| 75% and above | Distinction | Highest classification. Strong credential for PG admissions and competitive exams. |
| 60% to 74.99% | First Division | Strong result. Meets eligibility for most PG programmes and government recruitment. |
| 48% to 59.99% | Second Division | Decent result. Check specific cut-offs for your target courses before applying. |
| 40% to 47.99% | Third Division | You have passed. Some higher education programmes and jobs require 50%+ so verify before applying. |
| Below 40% or any paper below 33% | Fail | Back paper required for failed papers. See revaluation section below. |
NEP vs Annual Pattern: Which Applies to You?
RMLAU has been shifting to the National Education Policy semester pattern since the 2023-24 academic session. If you were admitted from 2023-24 onwards, you are almost certainly on the NEP semester system. Under this pattern, each semester has internal assessment marks (typically 25) and external examination marks (typically 75), adding up to 100 per paper. Both components count toward your percentage and both must individually meet the passing threshold.
Students admitted before 2023-24 on older programmes may still follow the annual year examination pattern with different mark distributions. The passing criteria of 33% per paper and 40% aggregate applies to both systems. When using the calculator above, enter your total marks for each subject including internal and external combined, as it appears on your marksheet. Do not separate them unless your marksheet shows them as distinct papers.
Scored Low? Here is What to Do
Two options are available if you are unhappy with your result or have failed a paper. Act quickly on both because windows close fast after the result.
Scrutiny and Revaluation: The revaluation application window opens roughly six to seven days after RMLAU declares the result. You apply online through rmlau.ac.in and pay a fee per subject. Your answer sheet goes to a different examiner who marks it from scratch. Marks can increase, stay the same, or in uncommon cases decrease. Use this option if you genuinely feel your answer sheet was undermarked. Scrutiny is a lighter option that only checks for totaling errors and missed questions, not a full re-marking.
Back Paper Exam: If you have failed in one or more subjects, you need to register for the back paper examination. This is held alongside the next semester examination cycle. The registration form is available on the RMLAU portal and closes within a few weeks of result declaration. Do not let this deadline pass. Clearing your back papers on time keeps your academic progression on track and does not add a gap year to your record.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the minimum percentage to pass in RMLAU?
You need at least 33% marks in each individual paper to pass that paper. Additionally, your aggregate percentage across all subjects must be at least 40% to be declared passed overall by RMLAU. Both conditions must be met. Passing every paper individually but having an aggregate below 40% still results in a fail.
How is RMLAU percentage calculated?
RMLAU percentage is calculated by dividing total marks obtained across all subjects by total maximum marks across all subjects, then multiplying by 100. For example, if you scored 520 marks out of a total of 900 maximum marks, your percentage is (520 / 900) x 100 = 57.78%, which puts you in Second Division.
What is First Division in RMLAU?
First Division at RMLAU means your aggregate percentage is 60% or above (up to 74.99%). If your aggregate is 75% or more, you are classified as Distinction, which is above First Division. Second Division is 48% to 59.99% and Third Division is 40% to 47.99%.
I failed one paper. What happens now?
If you have failed one or more papers (scored below 33%), you need to appear in the back paper examination for those specific subjects. The back paper exam is held in the next examination cycle, usually alongside even semester exams for odd semester back papers. You must register for the back paper through rmlau.ac.in within a few weeks of your result. Clearing the back paper lets you continue your course without repeating the year.
When does the RMLAU even semester result 2026 come out?
RMLAU even semester examinations (2nd, 4th and 6th semester for BA, BSc, BCom and 2nd, 4th semester for MA, MSc, MCom) were held in April and May 2026. Based on the university's typical result timeline of 45 to 60 days after exam completion, the even semester result 2026 is expected in May or June 2026. Check rmlau.ac.in or the result portal at result26.rmlauexams.in for the latest update.
Does RMLAU use CGPA or percentage?
RMLAU marksheets show marks and percentage, not CGPA. Unlike technical universities like AKTU, Avadh University follows a direct percentage-based evaluation system. Your marksheet will show subject-wise marks obtained, maximum marks, and your overall aggregate percentage. Division classification is based on this aggregate percentage.
How do I apply for revaluation at RMLAU?
RMLAU opens the revaluation application window approximately six to seven days after the result is declared. You can apply online through the official website rmlau.ac.in by filling out the revaluation form and paying the required fee per subject. The application window stays open for a limited period, usually 15 to 30 days. After the deadline, no revaluation requests are accepted. Apply promptly if you intend to use this option.
